Emery Kalinov

Emery Kalinov passed away this morning (Thursday, July 10th) at 7:45. He was a great friend, filled with life and adventure. He had a huge smile and a boisterous laugh, and he talked on the phone like he wished everyone in the building could be having such a great conversation. He was a proficient bass player and an avid outdoorsman. He was fluent in Bulgarian and traveled widely -- wherever he went people remember him fondly.

After excelling as an undergraduate at UT-Austin, Emery was admitted to UT-Southwestern Medical School, one of the top-rated schools in the country and a center for cancer research. However, before he could complete the last semester of his senior year, he was diagnosed with lupus and then germ-cell cancer.

Emery had always planned to go into medicine -- he studied chemistry as an undergraduate (although his roving intellect made many TAs and professors wish he would change to their field). He earned a prestigious SURF fellowship to UT-Southwestern Medical school, where he did cancer research with Dr. Thomas Sato. He had not decided whether he would pursue a career as a doctor or a medical researcher, but in either capacity it was clear that his intellect, drive and first-hand experience with cancer and lupus made him singularly equipped to understand and treat these grave mysteries. I was always amazed to see Emery talk with doctors from MD Anderson Cancer Center and UT Southwestern medical school as colleagues, discussing his treatment and the latest research papers on cancer.

Anyone who knew Emery is missing a great friend. Everyone who has encountered cancer or lupus is missing a great ally in the battle to conquer these diseases.
